Reject errant politicians, former minister urges electorate

Nigeria’s former Minister of External Affairs, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, on Friday called on Nigerians not to trust politicians who contributed to the nation’s current challenges and had continued to position themselves for elections or re-elections in 2023.

Akinyemi made this call during the 9th annual lecture of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria.

He stated that politicians were taking Nigerians for granted and believed that the people had forgotten the roles they (politicians) played in grounding the country’s nation’s economy.

“I am not happy that those who brought us to the edge of the precipice as a nation, instead of gluing to their seat quietly at home to hide their heads for the tragedies they brought on the nation, they are even the one positioning themselves as the saviour to the country. This is very sad,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, a professor of International Law and Jurisprudence, Akin Oyebode, has urged the electorate to take advantage of the new election season to vote in candidates that will make a difference in the country’s existential circumstances.

He spoke on Friday at the 9th annual public lecture of the Foursquare Gospel Church with the theme, ‘A nation at war against itself: The way forward’, held in Lagos.

Oyebode said this would make the nation come to terms with its current challenges.

He said, “Chinua Achebe informed us a few years ago that the primary problem in Nigeria is that of leadership. If only we can get the leadership issue right, everything else would fall in place.”
